Four years Four years since I sat in my mama's dark room with @griffithtami in the middle of the night as her breathing slowed—four years since I got to lay next to her and hold her hand. Staying for those days with her, and in those last hours, was the hardest thing I've ever done. It's funny how just staying can be so hard. Grief is such a weird and unique thing. I told a friend recently that it feels like a companion. Always present. Sometimes it's loud, and sometimes barely perceivable, always familiar. But on this day I never know what it's going to look like. This year it caught me by surprise. Especially since I'd been thinking about grief so much with Easter. My tendency is to flee from the emotions. Distract myself. Ignore them. But I think when it comes to sorrow, Jesus wants us to stay. Press in. Be present. Even when it's hard. I think only when we are present is He able t comfort us in our sadness. I did all my normal things to cope. I tried baking, and sad songs, and familiar books. And none of it worked. Because sometimes nothing works when it comes to grief. And that's ok too. Sometimes all you can do is choose to stay. Fight to be present. And press in when Jesus meets you there, because just like us, He is familiar with loss. We've all lost something. Gone all in and came out empty. Loved so much that when things end it's tragic. Sometimes the loss is our fault, and sometimes it's not. Either way we all know what it feels like to loose. And so does Jesus. So no matter where you find yourself in the middle of your loss I'd like to share a little something with you. There are no rules to grief. No guidelines it plays by. It's sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, but probably lingering below the surface. And all of it is ok. So give yourself some grace. All you have to do is stay. Press in. Be present. That's costly enough and God knows we are just dust. Sometimes our grief brings the clarity we need to choose a better path. So in the sorrow, don't miss out. Stay. Press in. There are some new friends here, and I live in a new city, so I'd thought I'd say hey and tell you a little about myself. To say I love Jesus feels cliche. But it's true. He's not someone I just talk about, but I know Him like a close friend and I feel like He lives in my bones. It's a weird explanation but it's the best I've got. I'm an auntie! Being an aunt is by far my greatest joy. More to come on this later. The church is my family. Both my parents have passed in the last few years but the church has been my family since I was 16. It's why I'd literally give my life for the local church. I love all things whimsey and magical. Harry Potter is my jam. C.S. Lewis is my celebrity crush. I love tacos, coffee, tea, and a really good cupcake. You can hear me saying "You guys, it's the gospel." and "I will punch somebody." I haven't actually punched anyone since high school. I'm spicy, a bit rough around the edges, and in a lot of ways not what most would consider normal when it comes to being a girl and a pastor. But it's true what they say, your 30's are where you find yourself, and I'm hanging on to the things that matter like a reality t.v star to their 15 minutes of fame and hopefully growing towards a healthier, holier, freer version of myself. RESTORATION I hate the restoration process. I like to watch Chip and Joanna restore things. They make it look fun and easy. But let's keep it real friends. It is messy and hard and ugly and exhausting. I don't like how hard it is on me. I don't like how hard it is in relationships. I don't like how hard it is to help someone else in the process. But here is the catch. I sure do like the outcome of the process. I am always in awe of how God has taken me in my brokenness and continues to move me to wholeness. I am beyond thankful for the relationships that have been broken but are now stronger than ever before. And I am never more blown away by who God is than when I watch a person fight all the things against them to come out the other side more whole and walking in the call of God on their life. The process is messy and hard, and ugly and exhausting. But the outcome. It is priceless. I'm determined to be the kind of person that restores, renews, revives, reclaims, and redeems others.
